A discussion on data protection compliance in Kenya

The Privacy Symposium Africa (PSA) is a Pan-African Privacy and Data Protection platform established in 2019 by Unwanted Witness to attract, present, and discuss original research results and the latest technological developments related to personal data protection and privacy.

This year's PSA was co-organised by Unwanted Witness and the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law (CIPIT) of Strathmore University, and took place from 2-4 November 2022 in a hybrid format (online and in Nairobi, Kenya).

In the framework of the event, the AU-EU Digital for Development (D4D) Hub hosted a panel session on how Kenyan SMEs can effectively achieve data protection compliance. Addressed to data processors and controllers in Kenya wishing to better understand the newly enacted Data Protection Act (which is inspired by the EU General Data Protection Regulation), the session's objective was to foster an open exchange on good practices and lessons learned from Africa and Europe.

This activity was coordinated by the GIZ Digital Transformation Centre in Kenya.

Speakers:

  • Francis Monyango, Research Fellow at CIPIT, Strathmore University
  • Mercy Mutindi, Certified Information Privacy Manager and Advocate
  • Anne Mosero, Deputy Data Commissioner, Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) in Kenya
  • Liesa Boghaert, attorney-at-law at Timelex and GDPR expert

Moderator:

  • Megan Kathure, Policy Analyst on Data and Internet Governance
