IDEA D4D HUB PROJECT

Empowering trans-continental digital ecosystem collaboration

The IDEA D4D Hub project embraces an interdisciplinary and inclusive approach to empower digital ecosystem collaboration, nationally, regionally and trans-continentally (Africa-Europe), to jointly advance a human-centric digital transformation. As civil society organisations and academia are critical stakeholders in the digital transformation as well as in decision-making processes, the project is concentrating on strengthening their capacity to participate in the development of an inclusive and sustainable digital economy and society, which safeguards democratic values and rights in the interaction between citizens and technology.

OUR ACTIVITIES

The IDEA Project strengthens civil society organisations and academia in Africa to participate in inclusive digital transformation through:

1
Capacity Building

Providing capacity building activities for civil society and academia through workshops

2
Innovation Days

Pooling of challenges and the joint development of corresponding innovation at so-called Innovation Days with all relevant stakeholders (private and public sector, civil society, academia, think tanks)

3
Synergy Creation

Building partnerships across countries, regions and continents and creating synergies with other EU support activities like the AU-EU D4D Hub and Africa Connect, and disseminating their results.

The activities will be implemented in five African countries: Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Uganda, Tunisia and Morocco based on the wide network of the consortium partners in EU-Africa collaboration such as BetterplaceLab, Enabel, Expertise France, GIZ and Smart Africa Secretariat.

OBJECTIVES

Strategic objectives:

  1. Empower strategic multi-stakeholder partnerships and cooperation on research and innovation in the Digital Economy between Africa and Europe.
  2. Strengthen the international dimension of Horizon 2020.
  3. Contribute to the implementation of the European Commission D4D Strategy.

Direct objectives:

  1. Supporting and strengthening the role of ICT/digitalisation
stakeholders (civil society and academia), to engage and
contribute actively to multistakeholder dialogues for human centered digital transformation.
  2. Supporting the development of joint digital innovations as a
response to societal challenges hindering an inclusive digital society.

Capacity building

The project will build capacities of civil society and academia actors through workshops on relevant topics such as bridging the digital divide, positioning Africa in the global Internet economy, access solutions for underserved communities. The workshops will be held in Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Tunisia, and Uganda.

Prior to these workshops, which will host up to 20 participants each, specific topics of relevance will be enquired from civil society organisations, universities, research centres and think tanks, to align the workshop content to local needs and to prepare participants for the project activities.

We invite actors from civil society organizations (CSOs) and academia in our partner countries to identify their needs and challenges to participate in digital transformation. If your organization works in Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Tunisia or Uganda, or you know an organisation active in digital rights & inclusion, digital transformation of government services or businesses, digital skills development or other digital topics, we invite you to take part in this survey!

Innovation days

The innovation days will bring the digital ecosystem together with civil society organizations, academia and other key stakeholders such as the private and public sector, to jointly achieve inclusive digital transformation. Involving participants from the EU (80 participants) and Africa (200 participants), the innovation days will be practical events that foster collaboration and peer to peer exchange between the local ecosystem which will co-create innovative solutions to solve the identified societal key challenges in digitalization in collaboration with European stakeholders. Participants will also be supported by consortium partners throughout and after the events through the implementation of designed solutions.

These innovation days will be organised in Mozambique, Burkina Faso, Uganda and Morocco.
